Does Your Child (infant – 5-year-old) Need Additional Support?

Children develop at different rates. Sometimes a child may benefit from professional support to strengthen important developmental skills, especially if they are infants to 5-year-olds.

NieCat Foundation of Excellence, Inc., through NieCat Blessings Academy, works to connect children and families with our highly qualified professionals who provide speech, occupational, and physical therapy services at home.

SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPY

Speech-language therapy may help children who have difficulty with:

  • Expressing wants and needs
  • Saying or producing sounds and words
  • Understanding language
  • Following directions
  • Building vocabulary
  • Combining words into sentences
  • Communicating effectively with others
  • Social communication
  • Feeding or oral-motor skills, when within the therapist’s scope of practice
  • Using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), when appropriate

Consider a referral when:
A child is difficult to understand, is not communicating as expected, appears frustrated when trying to communicate, has difficulty understanding language, or has other communication concerns.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupational therapy may help children develop skills needed to participate more independently in everyday activities.

Areas of support may include:

  • Fine-motor development

  • Pre-writing and writing skills
  • Sensory processing and regulation
  • Dressing and other self-care skills
  • Feeding-related functional skills, when appropriate
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Play skills
  • Attention and participation in daily routines
  • Increasing independence with age-appropriate activities

Consider a referral when:
A child has difficulty using their hands, participating in daily routines, tolerating certain sensory experiences, completing age-appropriate self-care activities, or engaging successfully in play and learning activities.

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy may help children improve movement, strength, balance, coordination, and mobility.

Areas of support may include:

  • Gross-motor development
  • Walking and mobility
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Strength
  • Posture
  • Motor planning
  • Navigating the child’s environment
  • Participating in age-appropriate physical activities
